Three Fun Places to Check Out During a Trip to North Central Washington
North Central Washington is home to a great many attractions, both natural and man made. Some of the most beautiful things to see and places to go in the region though are located in gorgeous outdoor settings. Here are just three great things to check out during a trip to North Central Washington.
Grand Coulee Dam
Grand Coulee Dam was constructed way back in the late 1930s and was at the time the largest concrete structure in the world. The dam has brought many benefits to the region including hydroelectric power, recreational opportunities on the water backed up behind it, and irrigation for agricultural purposes. Tours of the dam can be had by visitors and are truly enlightening. Viewing the nightly laser light show that is shown on the water pouring out of the spillway is something that should not missed.
Icicle Canyon
Located just south of Leavenworth, the Icicle Canyon is one of the more beautiful rugged areas to be seen in North Central Washington. There are a number of hiking trails that lead through the canyon, as well as up the surrounding hillsides and into surrounding wilderness. Icicle Creek flows through the canyon, raging at times, and empties into the Wenatchee River right on the outskirts of Leavenworth. Icicle Canyon is also popular with long distance backpackers and rock climbers too.
North Cascades Highway
One of the prettiest scenic drives that can be experienced in the entire United States can be found in beautiful North Central Washington. The North Cascades Highway is a high altitude route across the northern Cascade Mountains. The area gets so much snow that the highway is usually closed for four to five months each and every winter. There are high mountain peaks, tall waterfalls, and dense forests to view while traveling over the North Cascades Highway. There are also a number of great recreational activities that can be participated in throughout the region that the highway passes through.
