Remember that safety is important when you are playing any type of sport. In baseball, it is especially true. Avoid injury, by always knowing where specifically the ball is. Errant baseballs can knock teeth lose. Additionally, a slider sliding into the base can cause injury to your legs.
Make sure you know where your teammates are at all times. You can avoid your chance of colliding with another player by always being aware of what is going on around you. Players can receive head injuries if they collide too hard. When you go after the ball, let everyone know where you are.
When you are running bases, pay attention to your base coaches who are giving you signs. Base coaches have the best view of the playing field. Focus only on the coaches when you are running the bases. Allow them to be your eyes. If the coaches tell to to stop, stay where you are. If they tell you to run, run!
Make sure that your baseball glove is properly broken in before you begin to practice. It is great to have scored a new glove, but you need to have it ready for game time. Toss a baseball into it repeatedly. Apply some leather conditioner to it. Hit the weave of the glove over and over with your fist. Gloves that are broken in will perform better.
There are times that you need to think of the team rather than yourself. Doing so is part of team play. Sometimes moving a runner up a base is more important than getting yourself on, and the better choice is a sacrifice fly or bunt from you. While this may not stand out as much as trying to knock a home run out of the park, sometimes you just need fundamentals for that score and win.
